Thoughts on dermabrasion and rosacea

Mermaid posts her thoughts on micro-dermabrasion:

I agree. I don't think it is worth the risk even TRYING these procedures -- if that risks worsening the underlying vascular / nerve-related disorder.

"I am at last on the road to recovery and as I said even though my skin is smooth and soft and probably have no right to put forward my opinion on this matter, I know that it was a harsh anti-acne, anti-ageing skincare routine that catapulted me into rosacea hell."

Inspiring rosacea cure post

Ann, who used to be a regular on the rosacea-support group, posts a story of her battle against rosacea. In a nutshell, she won, after a long hard battle: 42 (yes, forty-two) laser treatments

"So to finally put an end to my long struggle, I have now been rosacea free for going on 2 years this September. Still having those follow ups and maintance treatments however, just to make sure things arecontinously kept at an even keel. I continue to live my life everyday to the fullest and rarely think about how my rosacea had once taken over my very existance."

Zileuton, Boswellie and 5-lipo-oxygenase

Great post by Dan who has been doing some research on Boswellia (Boswellic Acids) as a natural inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase.

It will be interesting to see any follow up messages.

"I am having remarkable results with the Boswellia, with none of the harsh side effects of the Ivermectin I took (see my Ivermectin post on 12/10/04 for more info). The first day I took Boswellia, I noticed an almost immediate - within 2 to 3 hours - reduction of sebum production. Since then, I've seen a further decrease in sebum production, burning sensations, P&Ps, the odd KP like rash I get on myarms, legs and stomach and the seb derm in my scalp. Each day, my skin seems to get better, and at this point, my skin is in AMAZING condition - the seb derm on my scalp is gone, my skin is pale (yes, this is a good thing), I've only had a couple of very short lived instances of burning sensations in the last week - one after way too much wine, and my skin looks clearer than it has in 30 years"

Accutane Absorbtion Rates

Great post by Gary on Accutane Absorbtion, which was followed up by Rick:

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-support/message/66501

In a nutshell:

Taking accutane with a meal increases its absorbtion by up to 2x. This has implications for those who are taking, say 20mg every two days and want to minimise the amount utilised by their body.

Quote:

Pharmacokinetics
Absorption

"Due to its high lipophilicity, oral absorption of isotretinoin is enhanced when given with a high-fat meal. In a crossover study, 74 healthy adult subjects received a single 80 mg oral dose (2 × 40 mg capsules) of Accutane under fasted and fed conditions. Both peak plasma concentration (C max ) and the total exposure (AUC) of isotretinoin were more than doubled following a standardized high-fat meal when compared with Accutane given under fasted conditions (see Table 2 below). The observed elimination half-life was unchanged. This lack of change in half-life suggests that food increases the bioavailability of isotretinoin without altering its disposition. The time to peak concentration (T max) was also increased with food and may be related to a longer absorption phase. Therefore, Accutane capsules should always be taken with food (see DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION). Clinical studies have shown that there is no difference in the pharmacokinetics of isotretinoin between patients with nodular acne and healthy subjects with normal skin."

Rosacea and hope

Really nice post by Mermaid about hope and rosacea

Although my life is far from normal, far from the active, funfilled, rewarding, exciting life I led pre rosacea, I never let go of the dream that if I keep plugging away, no matter how tired I feel, I'll make it. I have reversed my rosacea Marci, so have faith that you will too. I was continuously told by every single of the 30 odd doctors that I saw, that 'I was the worst case they'd ever seen'. I can't tell you how many times my heart broke each time I heard this. But in spite of this, I'm now looking better than ever.
