Niacin flushing for photoderm treatment of rosacea

Warren on rosacea-support has posted some information and pictures on flushing with Niacin for rosacea sufferers.

Flushing before treatment with any kind of laser (IPL / photoderm / v-beam) is thought by some to be important in ensuring good results, and used by many of the Photofacial doctors (Bitter Sr. trained).

I've tried both niacin and sublingual spray. The niacin induced a powerful flush (including neck, arms, chest as well as face) but was quite uncomfortable and not long-lasting. The sublingual spray (Nitrolingual) for me did not induce a flush.

Retinaldehyde Study

The study on retinaldehyde and rosacea is available to download here. It costs $25 to download the PDF.

Flushing to exercise

Lots of group members have posted about finding sucking on ice cubes as a way to help avoid flushing. Ideally we'd knock flushing on the head with other treatments and not worry about having to live like this of course.

Personally I find that any form of cardio just kills my rosacea, particularly the next day. I've taken to using weights as an alternative form of exercise.

Avene Diroseal

I have posted my first thoughts on the Avene Diroseal cream (which contains retinaldehyde) .
If you're looking to buy it, it is available from garden.co.uk in Europe.

Diroseal with Retinaldehyde

There has been an interesting discussion on the rosacea-support group about an Avene product called "Diroseal" which contains retinaldehyde. Turns out that the active ingredient is supported by science, and that it may be helpful for the vascular aspects of this disease.

A quick search through the message archive reveals that the Diroseal has also been discussed before.

I've picked up the product last night from the Garden Pharmacy in Covent Garden. You can also buy it from their online pharmacy store. I'm sure it's available online in the US too. I'll post back after a few weeks to let you know how I get on with it.

[UPDATE: Didn't do any good for me...]
